The City of Danville Water Department will issue Boil Water Order for various reasons. If a Boil Water Order has been issued, the city will notify the affected residents using door hangers, notifications via social media, and also on this website. When a Boil Water Order has been issued, the affected area will be noted on the top of this page, and at the top of all pages of this site, including the homepage.
During a Boil Water Order that affects your area, it is important to know that CONTAMINATION HAS BEEN CONFIRMED and we urge all affected residents: Bring all water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one to two (1-2) minutes, let it cool before using or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for: drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation, until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. If you require additional information, please see the links and FAQs on this page or call (859) 238-1241.
A Boil Water Order is issued when CONTAMINATION HAS BEEN CONFIRMED in the water system. A Boil Water Advisory is issued as a precautionary measure when there is a potential for contamination.
The preferred method of treatment is boiling. Boiling water kills harmful bacteria and parasites (freezing will not disinfect water). Bring water to a full rolling boil for 1-2 minutes to kill most infectious organisms. Timing starts when the water starts to bubble. Boiling it longer than 3 minutes may adversely affect water quality and taste. Cool the water then place in clean containers for use.
Yes, if you disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersing them for at least 1 minute in tap water that contains 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Allow dishes to completely air dry. Most household dishwashers do not reach the proper temperature to sanitize dishes. Laundry water does not need to be treated, it is safe to wash clothes in tap water.
Unless specifically listed, water may be used for showering, baths, shaving and washing, so long as care is taken not to swallow or allow water in eyes or nose or mouth.
